Ryder Cup Betting
The Ryder Cup is a trophy that is given to the winning team of a golf tournament between the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup originally began as a tournament between America and Great Britain. Over the years the tournament has grown to allow representation by other European nations with the hope of leveling the playing field.
The Ryder Cup began in the 1920s, and since its beginning the rules and regulations regarding the tournament have constantly been changing. Even though the rules change, the tournament continues to be one of the most highly regarded golf tournaments. The Ryder Cup was officially started by a British merchant named Samuel Ryder. Samuel Ryder is known today as something of a golf legend. He became an accomplished golfer after learning to play the game of golf at age 50.
According to most historical accounts of the Ryder Cup, Samuel Ryder went to one of the first tournaments and offered suggestions. He later put up the money to found the tournament, hence the name Ryder Cup.
The United States won the first Ryder Cup tournament in 1926, despite the fact that they were beaten pretty badly in previous unofficial tournaments. This tournament is unlike more traditional tournaments, which means contestants are awarded points for beating their opponents, rather than based on how many strokes of the golf club they take to get the ball in a hole. Many people choose to place bets on the overall winner of the Ryder Cup each year.
