F1 Champion Button Linked to McLaren

Since Brawn GP snapped up last season’s Honda team, which bowed out of F1 due to being financially strained, Jenson Button managed to find himself back in a F1 car. Not only were Brawn a late entrant, creating the team with only a few weeks before the start of the 2009 season, but they have gone on to win the constructors and driver championships.

Jenson Button offered to take a massive pay cut compared to his salary at Honda. His previous ÂŁ8 million, reduced to ÂŁ3 million in an attempt to keep costs low for the new team. Six months and six wins later, he was crowned champion at Interlagos in Brazil and is looking to escalate his bank balance to what it was.

Ross Brawn, the team owner and manager, has yet to sign new terms with Button, whose manager Richard Goddard said, “Brawn could have sorted the situation weeks ago by offering a new contract. He (Button) has proved himself, we are hoping to agree terms soon”. Button hopes to stay with the championship winning team.

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh skirted around the question of Button taking up the seat, “Other teams have free spaces next year. Lewis would not have any objection in strengthening our team with such a great driver”. He went on to say, “At McLaren, we want to make a team which is not only competitive, but bring home silverware in the coming seasons”.
