For anyone new to the world of NFL Football sports book football betting, understanding football odds is quite important. You need to have some kind of understanding about how the system works, before you start to place any kind of wager.
The odds for any game are determined by how well, or how much of a chance the team you are willing to place your money on have of winning. This basically means that if your favourite team are doing very well in the league, the chance of them taking the crown are far greater than a lower placed team.
The NFL and most other sports in the US usually use the Money line odds system. This system uses prefixed ‘+’ and ‘-‘ symbols to determine the overall odds in any game. For example, if the odds were playing at better than evens it would show as a ‘+’ and if they were playing at less than evens, it would show as a ‘-‘.
So when you are placing a wager on your team and they are playing at +300 and you placed a $10 bet, if your team then win, the return would be $30. This is worked out as 300×10/100 which equals 30 and then add your original stake, which equals $40. If your team are playing at -400, you would need to place a wager of $400 to win $100. This means if your original bet is $40 and the bet is won, you will see a return of $50.
Although not every team play at the same odds, which means the return you will see for a win will vary, it really is not too difficult to understand. It is just a case of simple mathematics and placing the winning wager.
