The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional and reputable league which was established in 1917. It has approximately six Canadian teams and 24 American teams which consist of players from around the world.
The NHL is now extremely popular in the US and Canada and is heavily publicized on television and radio. Spectators have now grown to love the sport and more serious fans have started to place simple and strategic bets.
When making bets on games placed within the NHL it is imperative to take note of some differences between the NHL and regular ice hockey, specifically within the IIHF.
For example, the offside rule was changed in the NHL from 2004. The two line and offside pass ruling was removed. Allowing players who were in an attacking position the opportunity to return to the neutral area. The tag up offside rule was reintroduced in the same season.
Additionally, the way in which icings are announced is different within the NHL. The International Ice Hockey Federation calls these as soon as the puck is across the marked goal line. However, the NHL calls this if a player who is in a defending position makes contact with the puck prior to the opposition. This however excludes the goal keeper.
The NHL also has a difference in policy when it comes to penalties and how these can affect teams. For example, the NHL allows players that fight for instance to continue without removing players, only if the players involved are from separate teams.
The league has two main hockey seasons in which you can place bets. These consist of the regular season which stats in October and the exhibition season that begins in September. You can place bets such as props on 82 games that are played with teams such as The New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals. Each team plays half the games at their home ground and the other half away.
Each game sees teams allocated points so you can then place bets on the individual game winners, scores or even the overall tournament winners.
