March Madness or for the purists the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships is the big deal of college basketball with the best players facing off from all over the country as the tournament progresses through the regionals to the National final. There are some incredible March Madness records such as John Wooden who coached UCLA to 10 of their 11 titles.
More March Madness Records:
Since the NCAA started seeding teams for this tournament only once (1979) have all four #1 seeds made it to the Final Four.
Two #1 seeds have contested the final only six times:
- 1982 North Carolina defeated Georgetown
- 1993 North Carolina defeated Michigan
- 1999 Connecticut defeated Duke
- 2005 North Carolina defeated Illinois
- 2007 Florida defeated Ohio State
- 2008 Kansas defeated Memphis
Despite these stats there have only been two finals not featuring any #1 seeds: 1980 and 2006.
The UCLA Bruins team coached by John Wooden have entered March Madness four times undefeated and won all four times in 1964, 1967, 1972 and 1973.
Largest Margin of Victory in a Championship game: 30 points 1990 UNLV 103 Duke 73
Only five times have the reigning champion not reached the tournament the following year.
Top 3 winning colleges of all time:
- UCLA 11
- Kentucky 7
- Indiana 5
Most recent win for either of these three teams was the Kentucky victory in 1998
Despite John Wooden’s record 10 Championship wins he is in fourth place for most single game wins at March Madness:
- Mike Krzyzewski (Duke): 77
- Dean Smith (North Carolina): 65
- Roy Williams (Kansas, North Carolina): 50
- John Wooden (UCLA): 47
These four coaches have also made the most Final Four Appearances:

Incredibly the most points in a game, most field goals and most field goal attempts records were all set in one game by Austin Carr playing for Notre Dame vs Ohio in 1970:

Shaquille O’Neal holds the record for most blocked shots way back in 1992 playing for LSU vs BYU back when he could move a bit.
