It can be suggested when making a bet to not bet on the favourite fighters. This might seem like the opposite of what you should do, but there is a good reason why. Betting on the favorites is a mistake that many new bettors make. People who have a lot of experience in placing bets with mixed martial arts fighters advise people that they will lose a lot of money if they do not do this.

It is not recommended to bet on someone who is above a -400 favorite. About -300 or so on most of my bets is OK, but even then not so good. Many people who are new to betting have the urge to bet on as many fights as possible. This is not good thinking because there are so many fights where neither fighter has an edge. If there is no discernible edge, then it is not advisable to place your money on a fight. Some people like to place bets just for the fun of it and this is OK to do if you do not wager a lot of money.

It is always a good idea to bet on an underdog. To profit in the long run, more bets need to be placed on more underdogs than favourites. When you are betting on UFC fights, there is a larger amount of favouritism on the favourite fighters, so you need to win at a much higher ratio then if you are choosing an underdog to win.
