Mixed Martial Arts are full contact combat sports. This means that these are a sport in which two people fight each other. Some examples of these sports can include boxing, kickboxing, fencing, amateur wrestling and puroresu.
Puroresu, for people who are not familiar with this term, is a word for professional wrestling in Japan and is very popular among people in the United States as well.
The history of these games can be traced back as early as the 1900s. Of course, over the years the sports have changed and the rules have changed as well. Early on there were very few rules for the games and people could and did get seriously injured.
Today there are many safeguards in place to ensure that the opponents do not get seriously injured. It was not until around 1993 that mixed martial arts became very popular in the United States. Many people enjoy playing these sports, and they also enjoy betting on these sports. It is safe to say that typically these sports are more popular among men, for they are contact sports and many women do not like the fierceness of these sports.
There are three main techniques in mixed martial arts, and they are striking, grappling and weapon usage. Striking means that one person is attacking the other with some sort of object with the intention to harm them. Striking could occur with the hand like a slap or hit, or with the leg like a kick. Either way, strikes hurt. Grappling means to grab someone without hitting them, for example to put them in a choke hold by taking them by the neck and squeezing. This hurts also. Weapon use is pretty self explanatory, and again, it hurts as much as the other two techniques. Of course there are rules that govern all of these techniques.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship is an organization that governs mixed martial arts games and also started around 1993. Now it is extremely popular and the championship fighters can become very well known and also make lots of money.
