Another crucial game on Wednesday night for the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks as they look to inch closer to assuring they have a chance to defend their title. The Hawks are -200 favorites tonight against St. Louis on Bodog’s NHL odds.
Chicago is currently eighth in the West, tied with Anaheim with 93 points after Tuesday’s 2-1 overtime loss at Montreal. Chicago put on a whopping 44 shots on net against the Habs’ Carey Price but only Patrick Kane could get one past Price. The Hawks have scored just four times in their last four games. With three games left, Chicago has a two-point lead over Dallas and Calgary for that final playoff spot. And there’s still obviously the chance to overtake Anaheim for seventh in the conference. The Ducks, Blackhawks and Stars all have three games left, while Calgary has two. Chicago will be shorthanded tonight as Troy Brouwer suffered a right shoulder injury 6:53 into the third period of Tuesday’s game and is out tonight. The right wing landed awkwardly against the boards in the left corner of the Canadiens zone after Lars Eller avoided Brouwer’s attempt for an open-ice hit. Chicago already has lost forwards Patrick Sharp (knee) and Dave Bolland (concussion) to injury. Since leading goal-scorer Sharp went down on March 20, the Hawks have scored nine goals in seven games.
The Blues are eliminated from playoff contention so theoretically have zilch to play for. But they enter on a two-game winning streak, having outscored the opposition 9-2 in that stretch. In Tuesday’s 3-1 win over the Avalanche, St. Louis snapped a seven-game losing streak against that franchise. St. Louis picked up four fighting majors to push its league-leading total to 78.
This is the sixth and final meeting between the Central Division rivals. Chicago has won three of the first five.
