Woods finished in third place at last week’s Emirates Australian Open, ending up two strokes back of winner Greg Chalmers and one shot behind second-place John Senden.
That was a good enough performance, however, to get Woods down to 6/1 odds to be the Top American at this week’s Presidents Cup event, which will see the top United States golfers taking on their International (non-European) counterparts in the biennial tournament.
Woods, a somewhat controversial selection by American captain Fred Couples for this event, is one of only three golfers to have turned in perfect Presidents Cup performances in the past, going a sparkling 5-0-0 at the 2009 tournament in San Francisco. The Americans won that year by a score of 19.5 to 14.5, making them the defending champions this week.
Webb Simpson is next after Woods at 7/1 odds to be the Top American this week, with each of Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and Nick Watney at 8/1 on that golf odds board. Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, and Matt Kuchar are all at 9/1, with Hunter Mahan and David Toms at 10/1, Bill Haas at 12/1, and Bubba Watson at 14/1.
Woods is also the 6/5 favorite at the Bodog Sportsbook to be the top Captain’s Pick in Melbourne this week, with fellow American Haas at 11/4 on that list. International team members Aaron Baddeley (5/2) and Robert Allenby (7/2) are the other choices.
As for the overall event, the Americans are at 4/5 odds to retain the title, with the International team sitting at 10/11 odds on that board. The United States has won this tourney six of the eight times it’s been held, with one tie and one International win.
