With just over a week to go before The Masters, some of golf’s biggest stars will be hitting the Shell Houston Open to tune up. Matt Kuchar is the favorite this weekend with 12/1 PGA betting odds.
Though he’s still searching for his first victory of the season, Kuchar is off to a fantastic start in 2011. The American has been very consistent, racking up five Top-10 finishes in his seven events this season. Three of those were finishes among the Top 5, including a fifth-place effort at the World Golf Championships at Doral a few weeks ago. Kuchar has been buzzing around the top of the leaderboard all season and he’s due for a victory.
Lee Westwood is right behind Kuchar with 14/1 odds to win the Shell Houston Open. The Englishman has made just three appearances on the PGA Tour this season, and the results haven’t been pretty. He’s yet to even crack the Top 15, including an 18th-place finish at Doral recently. Westwood hasn’t fared any better on the European Tour this season.
Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan are each tied with 16/1 odds to win the Shell Houston Open. The southpaw opened the season with a pair of Top-10 finishes in his first three events, but he’s cooled off considerably since then, finishing no better than 17th. Mickelson settled for 24th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend.
Fellow American Mahan has already racked up four Top-10 finishes in eight events this season. He nearly got a win at Pebble Beach in February, finishing second. Mahan struggled last weekend, though, placing 38th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Steve Stricker rounds out the top five competitors; he has 20/1 PGA betting odds this weekend. Charl Schwartzel and Francesco Molinari are clumped together at 25/1, followed by Anthony Kim and Padraig Harrington at 28/1 each.
