Tennis Betting: Australian Open Women’s Preview
The men aren’t the only ones having fun on tennis betting this weekend, as the ladies will also be heading to Oz for their first Grand Slam event of 2011. This is your Australian Open women’s preview.
Kim Clijsters is a heavy favorite with 15/8 Australian Open odds at Bodog. The Belgian is still seeking her first career victory in this tournament, however. While she owns three career Grand Slam titles, all of them came in the same tournament—the U.S. Open. Clijsters has reached the semifinals or finals of the Australian Open five times in her career, but last season she was ousted in the third round. Overall she’s performed pretty well, though, going 31-8.
Caroline Wozniacki – the No. 1 ranked woman in the world — follows Clijsters with 9/2 odds to win the Australian Open. Wozniacki is relatively new to the scene, though, and hardly offers the experience Clijsters does. The Dane has played in just three Australian Open tournaments, getting ousted in the third or fourth round each time. Wozniacki has only ever gone as far as the finals or semifinals of a Grand Slam twice in her career (both at the U.S. Open).
Justine Henin ranks third on women’s Australian Open odds at 6/1. She’s no wide-eyed rookie. Henin has been ranked No. 1 in the world before and owns seven Grand Slam championships—including a win at the Australian Open in 2004, when she defeated Clijsters 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Henin came oh-so-close against last year, when she lost in the final to Serena Williams, who isn’t playing in this tournament due to an injury.
Maria Sharapova rounds out the top four competitors with 10/1 odds to win the Australian Open. The Russian captured the Aussie Open in 2008, though she was bounced in the first round last year.
