The biggest names in tennis will descend upon California this week as the BNP Paribas Open gets underway at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells. This is your men’s preview.
It’s no surprise to find Rafael Nadal as the tournament’s No. 1 seed. Nadal The world’s top-ranked player, is still searching for his first victory of the season, however, and he hasn’t played in a tournament since late January. The Spaniard fell in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open to David Ferrer. Before that, he was ousted in the semifinals by Nikolay Davydenko at the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open. Nadal recently won his first two Davis Cup matches of 2011, taking care of business against Olivier Rochus and Ruben Bemelmans.
Former world-No. 1 Roger Federer claims the tournament’s second seed. The native of Switzerland is gunning for his second victory of the season; he defeated Davydenko to win in Qatar in early January. It was the first of three straight times Federer has reached at least the semis this season—he lost in the semis to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open before losing to Djokovic again in the finals at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Speaking of Djokovic, he’s been given the third seed at the BNP Paribas Open and should be a major threat in this week’s tennis betting odds. The Serbian is already 2-for-2 this year. He defeated Andy Murray to claim the Australian Open before beating Federer in Dubai.
Roger Soderling rounds out the top four seeds. The Sweden native has played pretty well in 2011. He kicked off his year with a third-place finish at an exhibition in Abu Dhabi, which gave him enough momentum to win the Brisbane International; though he admittedly didn’t face the toughest competition, Soderling didn’t lose a single set and was broken just once. He finished fourth at the Australian Open and has won two tournaments in Europe this season.
