Tyson and Holyfield meet again

It was a reunion that some thought would never occur; or if it did would be one where the protagonists would once again either come to blows or trade insults.

Instead it was almost warm and cuddly. Former world champion boxers Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield were reunited on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on October 16.

It was June 28, 1997 when one of the most controversial fights ever took place between Tyson and Holyfield for the WBA Heavyweight title bout. Tyson was disqualified for biting off part of Holyfield’s ear, leading some to question the champion’s sanity.

While Tyson admitted that his initial apology after the match was insincere, he stopped short of apologising again. However, Tyson shook hands with his former opponent and did nothing but heap praise on him. He said it was the first chance to actually speak to Holyfield since that encounter.

Remarkably, Holyfield even admitted he had done his own share of biting when he was a child. However, it was all part of growing up with his brothers and a way to get out of headlocks.

Holyfield stated that the appearance was worthwhile, especially in regard to the fact that reconciliation was always possible; a point he wanted to make to young people caught up in violence.

“We can come together,” he said. “We know you can come together.”

Holyfield is still missing part of his ear. Tyson meanwhile, later met Chicago mayor Richard Daley who was impressed with his concern about violence amongst youth.
