Veteran Umpires Only in Fall Classic?
After several disputed calls in the Division and League Championship Series there has been calls for more experienced umpires to be part of the World Series. This will mean a big change, as the last 24 World Series out of 25 have all had at least one umpire that had not worked the event before.
As well as an all veteran team being called for, there is talk of more instant replays to be used with questionable calls. Many people are against the use of technology such as the instant replay as a method of umpiring the games and just do not consider it part of the spirit of the game.
“We need to do a little work, clean up some things,” said Commissioner Bud Selig “But do I think we need more replays? No. Baseball is not the kind of game that can have interminable delays.”
It seems that this sentiment is echoed throughout the teams. The idea of umpires being replaced with instant replays seems to take away from a lot of the human element. “People are human,” said Yankees Derek Jeter. “They’re going to make mistakes sometimes. Umpires are trying their best. Sometimes you get calls and sometimes you don’t.”
It is hoped that by having more experienced umpires there will be less human error and disputed calls. There has been no official announcement as of yet by Major League Baseball but that is normal as umpire announcements are not made until the series opponents are named.
