Who’s Laughing Now?
People called him crazy. Said he was insane. Some speculated that he had possibly given up millions of dollars. That he may have even given up being the a top 10 pick.
Well ladies and gentlemen, right about now Stanford QB Andrew Luck’s decision to return for his senior season is looking pretty darn smart. And those who doubted him are looking pretty dumb. Think about it. With the NFL in a full on lockout, no players futures are certain. This leaves incoming rookies in the uncomfortable position of not having a new team, or the certainty of playing next year.
As long as the lockout continues, the top pick in this years draft will sign a mega contract worth a whopping ZERO dollars in salary. All that money to go along with not having a team to play for. Meanwhile, Luck gets to return to a good/great team for his senior year. In Palo Alto. At one of the top Universities in the country.
So not only is he guaranteed football next year, he’s also getting a college degree. Even if he never plays a down for an NFL team he’ll be in pretty good shape. Or let’s say his stock falls and he falls from the top overall pick to the late first round, ending up on a good team as the back-up to a seasoned vet. Rather than being thrown to the dogs as a rookie he’s given time to learn the in’s and out’s of the offense.
He get’s time to develop confidence. Know anyone else who took this route? Aaron Rodgers name rings a bell. Yea, the most recent Super Bowl champion. Worked out pretty well for him. So while we were all doubting Luck, we overlooked a key fact.
You have to be pretty smart to attend Stanford. Who knew.
